Selective Memory 036

I made it to the Ann Arbor Film Festival last night and saw As Above, So Below, a 60 minute documentary about impermanence and the transformation of our physical bodies and material possessions. It was beautiful and amazing.

Rewinding a bit, some highlights from the SPE conference in San Francisco. I saw the Rineke Dijkstra Retrospective at the SFMOMA. Simply excited to see her photographs in person, I especially appreciated the self portrait that inspired the beach portraits. Although different than what I originally expected, Sally Mann's talk and new work touched on the theme of the conference (intimacy and voyeurism) in a raw and vulnerable way. Skott Chandler's photographs from House Watch, made with ceiling mounted pinhole cameras, were eerie and fascinating. Last, William Tolan's talk about family photography, social networking, and why he hates Facebook spoke to me more than anything else I experienced. He struck a lovely balance of honesty and humor while examining the dynamics of his own family relationships.
